New York City Moves to Make Its Air More Breathable and the City More Sustainable: Greening NYC

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced on NBC's "Today" show that by October 2008 1,000 of the city's 13,000 yellow taxicabs will be gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles and by 2012 all of the city's taxicabs will be hybrids. Furthermore, he announced that after October 2008 all new vehicles entering the taxi fleet must attain 25 miles per gallon of gasoline and that one year later all new vehicles entering the taxi fleet must attain 30 miles per gallon. The current typical NYC taxicab gets only 14 miles per gallon.
Mayor Bloomberg is quoted as saying, "There are an awful lot of taxicabs on the streets of New York City. These cars just sit there in traffic sometimes, belching fumes."
The switch to hybrids is part of the city's broader goal of cutting carbon emissions by 30% by 2030.
NYC has extra incentive to make the green transition quickly and to well publicize the effort, as predictions are that without swift action in reducing carbon emissions from all sources, domestic and elsewhere, quite a bit of the city will be under water by the turn of the century, possibly much sooner, as the arctic and Antarctic ice sheets melt.
For the past 18 months, several hybrids have been tested in the city's taxi fleet. These include Toyota Motor Corporation's Toyota Prius (EPA in-city per-gallon mileage estimate of 60), its Toyota Highlander Hybrid (EPA in-city per-gallon mileage estimate of 32 for its front-wheel-drive edition and EPA in-city per-gallon mileage estimate of 31 for its all-wheel-drive edition), and its Lexus RX 400h (EPA in-city per-gallon mileage estimate of 33 for its front-wheel-drive edition and EPA in-city per-gallon mileage estimate of 31 for its all-wheel-drive edition), as well as Ford Motor Company's Ford Escape, which employs Toyota's hybrid technology.
All three of Toyota's hybrids have a Consumer Reports 2007 predicted short-term reliability in its highest category and a CR 2007 reliability verdict for model year 2006 in its highest category. The Ford hybrid has a CR 2007 predicted short-term reliability of only average and a CR 2007 reliability verdict for model year 2006 of below average; Ford appears to be able to fumble in the manufacture of a vehicle even with good borrowed technology.

NYC's Taxi Hybrids by Toyota Toyota Prius Toyota Highlander Hybrid 2007 Lexus RX 400h New York City's taxis are individually owned but must meet the specifications and regulations set by NYC's Taxi and Limousine Commission. This permits the speedy transition.
The taxi drivers for their part appear to support the switch to hybrids. The president of the New York Federation of Taxi Drivers, Fernando Mateo, is quoted as saying, "In the short term, they're going to have to spend more money, but in the long run they will save money [because of the hybrids' fuel efficiency]. We support getting more hybrids on the road."
Councilman David Yassky is credited with having led the hybrid-switch effort in NYC's city council.
