Auto on Info  March 2007 GM Expands Lead on CR's Used-Cars-to-Avoid List, a Tad By James B. Bleeker General Motors Corporation leads Consumer Reports' 2007 Used-Cars-to-Avoid list with 36.9% of the entries, followed by DaimlerChrysler AG with 22.0%. Ford Motor Company was third with 14.9% of the entries. The following chart graphically depicts each auto manufacturer's share of the 2007 list. In the above chart, each manufacturer's percentage of entries includes the contributions from all of its divisions (domestically and non-domestically headquartered) and is rounded to the nearest whole percent. Consequently, although Mazda Motor Corporation's percentage is shown to be 0, it still had 3 entries on CR's list of vehicles to avoid. Only Toyota Motor Corporation and the Subaru auto division of Fuji Heavy Industries, Ltd. had no entries in the 2007 Used-Cars-to-Avoid list. All but one of the several Honda entries were model years of the Honda Passport, a rebadged sport-utility vehicle of Isuzu Motors Ltd., an affiliate of General Motors Corporation. The next chart provides the percentages for CR's 2006 Used-Cars-to-Avoid list, for comparison. Note that the changes are very small. Also, only Toyota Motor Corporation and the Subaru division of Fuji Heavy Industries, Ltd. have no entries on the Used-Cars-to-Avoid list of either year. To make CR's list of used cars to avoid, a model year of a vehicle must be worse or much worse by reported serious problem frequency. The list includes model years of sedans, coupes, sports cars, sport-utility vehicles, minivans, and pickup trucks. The list is based on subscriber-questionnaire responses that number well in excess of one million. We next examine only the entries on the 2007 Used-Cars-to-Avoid list for model years 2004, 2005, and 2006 to search for possible trends. When the count of entries is limited to these more recent years, we have the following chart. We see that in this chart General Motors has a smaller percentage and that Ford and DaimlerChrysler have switched positions. This may indicate that GM and DaimlerChrysler have improved a bit of late, or it may simply mean that it takes a couple of extra years for GM and DaimlerChrysler products to crumble. Nissan's five percentage point increase is likely an indication that its products have worsened some in recent years.
