Toyota Reliability Takes Another Leap Up; Honda's Too; Toyota-GM Reliability Gap Sets Another Record: Will GM Bottom?

The Reliability Index average of Toyota Motor Corporation jumped .12 from .62 in 2005 to .74 in 2006. And Honda Motor Company's average jumped similarly - up .13 from .60 to .73.
The Reliability Index values and averages are based on the paucity of reported serious problems for vehicles between the ages of 6 and 8 years. Consequently, the 2006 Reliability Index values and averages use the reported performance of vehicles from manufacturing years 1998 and 1999. See Methodology.
Among the other companies at the upper end of the reliability spectrum, improvement, when present, was less spectacular. Nissan Motor Company's Reliability Index average rose .09, from .37 to .46. Subaru's average remained the same at .42. And Mazda Motor Corporation's average rose .12 from last year's .17, but rose only .02 from 2004's .27.
The following chart depicts Toyota Motor Corporation's Reliability Index average history and an extrapolation of the averages to the 2007-2008 pair of manufacturing years.
Honda's improvement and extrapolation closely parallel Toyota's.
At the other end of the spectrum, General Motors Corporation's reliability, relative to that of Toyota, continues its seemingly endless descent. The gap from Toyota's Reliability Index average to that of GM fell .09 from -.83 in 2005 to -.92 in 2006. A history of these gaps, together with an extrapolation to the 2007-2008 pair of manufacturing years, is depicted in the next chart.
As the maximum depth that the gap - between Toyota's or Honda's Reliability Index average and that of GM - can descend is -2.0 (as the index's range is from -1 to +1), in 2006 GM is nearly half-way to the bottom.
The history and extrapolation of the Toyota-Chrysler Reliability Index gaps, depicted next, also suggest that those hoping for products from the Chrysler Group of DaimlerChrysler AG of a reliability comparable to that of the products of Toyota and Honda had best pray for divine intervention.
Lastly depicted are the history and extrapolation of the Toyota-Ford Reliability Index gap, which offer a tad more hope for products by Ford Motor Company.
