Consumer Shift to Quality Gives Reliable Two Nearly Half of Global Market Capitalization and Leaves GM with 2%

The Thursday, March 23, 2006, issue of the Wall Street Journal reports that the market capitalization of Toyota Motor Corporation (the sum over all outstanding shares of the last price at which each class of shares was traded on a fixed date) equals 35.0% of the global market capitalization of all auto manufacturers. Honda Motor Company, the smaller of the Reliable Two, comes in second with 11.0% of the global auto manufacturer market capitalization.
Toyota and Honda have long dominated the various measures of automotive quality. In sharp contrast, the reliability of products by General Motors Corporation, relative to that of Toyota, has been one of seemingly unending descent, as the following chart depicts.
In even sharper contrast have been the numbers of U.S. safety recalls in recent years by GM and Toyota depicted in the next chart.
*Chrysler Group Cumulative Total may include Mercedes-Benz 2004 recalls; the article on the 2004 totals was unclear on this matter. Such have helped occasion a steadily growing demand for Toyota vehicles and a steadily eroding demand for GM vehicles. The consumer shift to quality has been particularly harsh on GM in the past two years, as the following chart depicts.
With growing consumer demand come rising profits and share prices, and with shrinking demand come lower profits or losses and declining share prices. The demand shift and resulting change in share prices yield the current market capitalization percentages for the six largest participants in the U.S. automobile market.
Following consumers, thousands of investors appear now to view GM and Ford as something of the nature of basket cases.
