Ford's Incendiary Problem May Include Explorers

In a February 3, 2006 article entitled "Fires Prompt Consumer Groups to Call for Ford Explorer Recall," ABC Action News reported that Ford Motor Company's Explorer may be subject to the same fire hazard that prompted Ford to recall 3.8 million Ford F-150 pickup trucks and Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator sport utility vehicles. The fire hazard arises, per Ford, when brake fluid leaks through the cruise control deactivation switch into the cruise control system's electrical components. The brake fluid sometimes, or always, causes corrosion of the electrical wiring. The corrosion increases resistance to electrical flow with the result that the temperature in the wiring of the cruise control system rises and, in particular, the temperature of the cruise control deactivation switch rises.
The ABC Action News article stated that a Ford spokesman acknowledged that the suspect parts of the recalled vehicles are similar to those found in the 1997-2002 Ford Explorers. It also referred to complaints reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as indicating a problem. However, for the years 2000, 2001, and 2002, site manager found that the number of fires attributed to the cruise control of the Explorer were only about 20% of those attributed to that of the Expedition (one of the recalled models), so the risk appears less and getting NHTSA to act may be challenging.
