Site Manager Replaces Corolla Transmission: 1984 Torque Converter Expires at 478,943 Miles

On June 20, 2005, shortly after exiting Interstate 94 in western Minnesota, site manager's transmission ceased functioning at 478,943 miles (approximately 800,000 kilometers) and 21 years and 1 month. Prior to exiting, no problem was evident.
His 1984 Corolla was towed to the local dealership, where the transmission was dissembled. An inspection revealed:
1. The inner socket of the torque converter was stripped,
2. The gear at the end of the rod that fits into the inner socket of the torque converter showed some, but very modest, wear,
3. In all other respects, the transmission showed no discernable wear.
The dealership recommended replacing the transmission with a used transmission as the most cost-effective solution; site manager agreed.
With regard to other major components, the Corolla's engine and air conditioner are original and untouched, but the radiator was replaced at about 290,000 miles with a new made-in-Japan radiator.
Site manager describes himself as a moderately abusive driver.
This likely provides a crude measure on the durability of the mid-1980s made-in-Japan Corolla and in particular, the mid-1980s made-in-Japan Corolla transmission; however, it provides no guide as to the life expectancy of the transmission of a mid-1980s Corolla operated by a nonabusive, conscientious owner, especially one operated in a more temperate climate.
