General Motors Vehicles Hit with Another Safety Investigation: NHTSA to Investigate 1.3 Million GM Pickup Trucks and SUVs for Corroding Brake Part
By James B. Bleeker
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has commenced an investigation of 1.27 million (Detroit Free Press says 1.28 million) 1999-2002 Chevrolet Avalanche, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Tahoe, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade sport utility vehicles and Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks sold in 20 states - Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri - for a speed sensor that may corrode. The consequence of such corrosion may be either increased stopping distances or unintended activation of the brake system. NHTSA reported that the condition has prompted 120 complaints and has caused 22 accidents, one of which involved six vehicles and four injuries.
The Detroit Free Press reported Alan Adler, a GM spokesman, as stating that the corrosion was occurring with a frequency of 3 per 10,000 vehicles.1 In a correction of one of its own articles, the Associated Press reported Mr. Adler as having said that problems from such corrosion occurred with a frequency of 3 per 100,000 vehicles.2 In any event, if one divides the 120 complaints by the 1.27 million vehicles, one obtains a frequency of approximately 1 per 10,000 vehicles.
General Motors recalled the same vehicle models in eastern Canada for the same problem in November 2004. Mr. Adler stated that the recall was prompted by a problem frequency of 3.2 per 10,000 vehicles.
This investigation adds a hefty 1.27 million vehicles to the other 3.1 million GM pickups currently under an upgraded investigation for a collapsing tailgate problem. The Tahoe is, of course, a Chevrolet and not a GMC, and the Cadillac Escalade was not among the vehicle models recalled in Canada. See Recall No. 2004395 on the Transport Canada website at http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/recalls/search1_e.asp.
