Ford Narrows Reliability Gap with Toyota and Widens Lead over GM

The following chart depicts how far Ford's Reliability Index Average has fallen below Toyota's Reliability Index Average over the Index's eleven-year history and projects the gap to model years 2005-2006 with a linear regression of degree one.
From the chart, it may be seen that Ford's intermediate term (6-to-8 year) reliability relative to Toyota's distinguished reliability record has improved over the eleven-year data history and has likely improved some beyond the data history.
The next chart depicts where Ford's Reliability Index Average has fallen relative to General Motors' Reliability Index Average over the eleven-year history and projects the gap to model years 2005-2006 with a linear regression of degree one.
Although the chart shows that Ford has gone from a reliability below that of GM to one rather considerably above that of GM, in this instance the linear regression may not be very useful. By casual observation, it appears that Ford's reliability relative to GM's is more cyclical in nature. Nonetheless, if the only options are a new Ford product and a new GM product, the Ford product is likely the better bet.
One word of caution: Ford reliability varies considerably with model. For example, the 1997-1998 Reliability Index Value of the Ford Windstar is -.48, one of the ten worst values. (See "Toyota and Honda Rule Most Reliable List with 12 of 12 Best, GM Dominates Least Reliable List with 8 of 11 Worst," Auto on Info, May 2005.) Consequently, before making a purchasing decision, the Reliability Index tables and the Reliability Percentrank and Grade tables should be examined in detail, as well as the April issue of Consumer Reports and the prospective vehicle itself.

DMOZ is the product of thousands of volunteers who select out the better sites that the web has to offer; consequently, there is an assurance of greater quality than the mean of what a search engine offers within the first 10 results of a phrase search.
