Toyota Tacoma Pickup Truck Scores Best on IIHS 2005 Crash Tests, Receives "Best Pick Frontal" Designation

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a research group funded by the U.S. automotive insurance industry, awarded Toyota Motor Corporation's 2005 extended cab Tacoma pickup truck an overall score of Good, its highest grade, on its 2005 Frontal Offset Crash Test. The pickup scored Good in the categories Structure / Safety Cage, Chest Injury Measure, Left and Right Leg and Foot Injury Measures, and Restraints / Dummy Kinematics, and an Acceptable, its second highest grade, in the category Head and Neck Injury Measure. For its lofty performance, the 2005 Tacoma extended cab pickup was awarded the designation IIHS Best Pick Frontal. It is the only small pickup to receive this designation.
Also, this edition of the 2005 Tacoma was awarded a Good in the "Other Evaluations" category of Head Restraint Geometry of Tested Vehicle.
Nissan Motor Company's 2005 extended cab Frontier pickup truck also was awarded an overall score of Good. It received Good in all of the Frontal Offset Crash Test categories except Left and Right Leg and Foot Injury Measures. In the Left Leg and Foot Injury Measure and Right Leg and Foot Injury Measure subcategories it scored Acceptable. Also, in the "Other Evaluations" category of Head Restraint Geometry of Tested Vehicle, it received an Acceptable.

IIHS 2005 Frontal Offset Crash Test Scores and Reliability Percentrank Averages and Grades for the Toyota Tacoma Pickup and Nissan Frontier Pickup Model Frontal Offset Crash Test Scores for 2005 Extended Cab Editions 1996-2000 Reliability Percentrank Average 1996-2000 Reliability Grade - High Standards Toyota Tacoma Good .93 A- Nissan Frontier Good .82 B- All other tested models received Acceptable or worse in two or more categories of the Frontal Offset Crash Test. The 1999-2005 extended cab Ford Ranger and Mazda B-Series received a grade of Marginal, second from the bottom, in the category of Restraints / Dummy Kinematics and in the subcategory Right Leg and Foot Injury Measure. The 2005 extended cab Dodge Dakota received a Poor, the Institute's lowest grade, in the subcategory Left Leg and Foot Injury Measure.
