Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey Minivans Score Best on 2005 Crash Tests, Receive IIHS "Best Pick Frontal" Designation; GM's Chevrolet Astro, GMC Safari, Pontiac TransSport / Montana, and Chevrolet Venture Score Worst
By James B. Bleeker
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a research group funded by the U.S. automotive insurance industry, awarded Toyota Motor Corporation's 2004-2005 Sienna minivan scores of Good, its highest grade, in all of its 2005 Frontal Offset Crash Test categories - Structure / Safety Cage, Chest Injury Measure, Head and Neck Injury Measure, Left and Right Leg and Foot Injury Measures, and Restraints / Dummy Kinematics. For this, the 2004-2005 Toyota Sienna was awarded the designation IIHS Best Pick Frontal.
Also, the 2004-2005 Toyota Sienna minivan was awarded a Good in the "Other Evaluations" category of Head Restraint Geometry of Tested Vehicle.
Honda Motor Company's 2005 Odyssey minivan also was awarded scores of Good in all categories of the Frontal Offset Crash Test and was similarly designated an IIHS Best Pick Frontal. However, its grade in the "Other Evaluations" category of Head Restraint Geometry of Tested Vehicle was one grade lower, an Acceptable.
The 2004-2005 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey received a grade of Good in all categories and subcategories of IIHS' Frontal Offset Crash Test, except the category Head and Neck Injury Measure, for which it earned an Acceptable. They too received the designation IIHS Best Pick Frontal.
At the opposite end of the spectrum were the 1996-2005 Chevrolet Astro and GMC Safari and the 1997-2005 Pontiac TransSport / Montana, and Chevrolet Venture, which attained an overall grade of Poor, IIHS' worst.
The following table provides a comparison of these eight models.
