General Motors' Dominion - Down & Under
By James B. Bleeker
Each year since 1997, General Motors Corporation has had more entries on Consumer Reports' annual much-worse-than-average reliability table than any other auto manufacturer, save for 1998, 1999, and 2003, when the Chrysler Group lead this ignominious list. By comparison, Toyota Motor Corporation, the Subaru division of Fuji Heavy Industries Limited, and Nissan Motor Company have had no entries on the much-worse-than-average reliability tables and Honda has had only one model making two such annual lists - the Passport, a rebadged product of Isuzu Motors Limited, a General Motors affiliate.
GM's fractions of entries on the much-worse-than-average reliability tables, together with a linear projection to 2011, appear in the chart below.
The chart suggests that those anticipating or hoping for a significant improvement in General Motors' quality standings had best pray for divine intervention, or new management, say a bankruptcy court judge.
