General Motors Chevrolet Astro and GMC Safari Minivans Get Lowest Test Score, Ford's E-150 Gets Lowest Rollover Score, GM Issues Recall of Chevrolet Uplander, Saturn Relay, and Pontiac Montana Minivans
By James B. Bleeker
Per a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration minivan report, General Motors Corporation's 2005 Chevrolet Astro and GMC Safari minivans received a rating of 3 out of a possible 5 with respect to driver injury from a frontal crash, the lowest for all minivans tested. The Chevrolet Astro and GMC Safari also have among the worst Reliability Percentrank histories of all models in AOI's Table I-MVRP, with 1996-2000 Reliability Percentrank averages of .04 and .05, respectively. (For another article regarding the Chevrolet Astro and GMC Safari, see "General Motors 2005 Safety Recalls Take Another Bump Up, AOI, March 2005.")
Per the same report, Ford Motor Company's 2005 E-150 received a rating of 3 out of a possible 5 with respect to likelihood of a rollover.
In the same report, NHTSA states that General Motors has initiated a recall of the Chevrolet Uplander, Saturn Relay, and Pontiac Montana minivans manufactured prior to January 21, 2005, as the release handle of the second-row bucket seats may unlatch in a side-impact collision. The number of affected vehicles was not stated.
