Toyota Corolla with Side Airbags Earns Best Small Car Side-Impact Test Scores, Dodge Neon Earns Worst Side-Impact Test Scores

The Toyota Corolla equipped with side airbags received the highest scores on the small car side-impact crashworthiness tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It received seven ratings of Good, one rating of Acceptable, and one rating of Marginal. The ratings of Good were for driver and rear passenger head protection, driver and rear passenger head/neck injury measure, driver and rear passenger torso injury measure, and rear passenger pelvis/leg injury measure. The rating of Acceptable was for driver pelvis/leg injury measure, and the rating of Marginal was for structure/safety cage.
The Dodge Neon received the lowest scores on the side-impact crashworthiness tests. It received seven Poors, one Marginal, and one Good. The Insurance Institute's March 6, 2005, News Release quotes Adrian Lund, its chief operating officer, as saying, "The car [the Dodge Neon] is a disaster. The structure is poor, and both dummies' heads were hit by the barrier during the crash test. High forces were recorded on the head, torso, and pelvis of the driver dummy. If this had been a real driver in a real crash, it's likely it wouldn't have been survivable."
The Dodge Neon has one of the worst Reliability Percentrank histories of all models in AOI's Table I-MVRP, with 1996-2000 Reliability Percentrank average of .06, out of a possible 1.00.
Of 16 small cars tested, 14 received an overall score of Poor. Those equipped with side airbags that received an overall rating of Poor were the Volkswagen Beetle, the Suzuki Aerio, the Hyundai Elantra, the Suzuki Forenza, and the Saturn Ion.
