General Motors 2005 Safety Recalls Take a Bump Up, but Ford Keeps Big Lead: Faulty Power Assist, Accelerator Pedal Spring, and Windshield Bond Prompt Recalls of GM SUVs, Vans, Pickups, Trucks, Coupes, and Sedans
On Thursday, February 10, 2005, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced three separate recalls by General Motors Corporation.
The largest recall, affecting 155,465 2004-2005 Chevrolet Avalanche pickup trucks, Chevrolet Express vans, Chevrolet Silverado pickup trucks, Chevrolet Suburban sport utility vehicles, Chevrolet Kodiak trucks, GMC Savana vans, GMC Sierra pickup trucks, GMC Yukon XL sport utility vehicles, GMC Topkick trucks, and Hummer H2 sport utility vehicles, is for a power assist that may crack, leak hydraulic fluid, reduce braking and steering control, and cause an accident, per the NHTSA.1,2
The second largest recall, affecting 19,924 2004 Cadillac SRX sport utility vehicles, Cadillac XLR coupes, and Pontiac Grand Prix sedans, for an accelerator pedal that may not function properly because the spring that returns it to its off position may crack in cold weather, per GM spokesman Alan Adler.2
The third recall, affecting 17,815 2005 Buick Rainier sport utility vehicles, Chevrolet Trailblazer sport utility vehicles, GMC Envoy sport utility vehicles, and Isuzu Ascender sport utility vehicles (Chevrolet Trailblazer-GMC Envoy rebadges3), because the bond that holds the windshield to the metal may loosen in certain humidity levels, per GM spokesman Alan Adler.2 Reuters reports NHTSA as saying, "If a crash occurs, the windshield may not be retained, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant."4
These three safety recalls bring General Motors' 2005 widely reported U.S. safety recalls to 291,425. The total includes GM's January 2005 safety recalls of 98,221 Chevrolet and GMC pickup trucks for a power assist that may crack and cause loss of braking and steering control.
