NHTSA Reopens Safety Investigation of Ford Seat Belts, Upgrades Investigation of Ford Stalling Complaints
The Detroit Free Press reports that the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has reopened a safety investigation into Ford Motor Company seat belts following 10,000 warranty claims that were made after an alleged repair of the problem in 2001. The affected vehicles were identified as 2001 F-Series pickups, Windstar minivans, and "other vehicles."
It also reports that the NHTSA has upgraded an investigation into a claimed stalling at slow speeds, and/or a failure to start, involving Ford pickups. The affected vehicles were identified as 2003-2004 F-Series pickups. The article states that Ford does not view the stalling problem as a safety problem, but that the NHTSA says that the problem has given rise to 12,536 warranty claims and reports of 14 crashes and 2 injuries. The article also notes that an upgraded investigation results in a recall 7 times out of 10.
Ford currently leads General Motors in 2005 U.S. safety recalls, with over one million, but General Motors lead the auto industry in 2004 U.S. safety recalls with over ten million, versus 5.04 million for Ford.
