General Motors Shuts Down Cadillac Plant for a Week, Reports WSJ
The Wall Street Journal reports that General Motors Corporation has shut down a plant that makes solely Cadillac motor vehicles, due to a big inventory glut. It says that GM has, in the U.S., a 138-day supply of Cadillac STS sedans, a 133-day supply of Cadillac CTS sedans, an 83-day supply of Cadillac Escalade sport utility vehicles, and an overall 115-day supply of Cadillac motor vehicles sitting in dealership and factory lots across the country. This compares with a normal GM 60-day supply and an earlier reported typical Toyota 30-day supply.
General Motors' Cadillac line has the lowest 1996-2000 Reliability Percentrank average, .13, of all major motor vehicle lines sold in the U.S. The second lowest is .15, for the Volkswagen line; however, VW's luxury line Audi has a 1996-2000 RPA of .36. For comparison, Ford's Lincoln's 1996-2000 RPA is .51, and Toyota's Lexus' 1996-2000 RPA is .92.
GM's Cadillac line has been rather insulated from the U.S. consumer shift toward quality, but these numbers suggest that this insulation may be wearing thin.
