Ford's 2005 U.S. Safety Recalls Leap Past GM's: Ford Recalls About 750,000 Ford and Lincoln Pickups and SUVs in U.S.
In North America, Ford Motor Company is recalling 792,000 2000 Ford F-150 pickup trucks, 2000 Ford Expedition sport utility vehicles, and 2000 Lincoln Navigator sport utility vehicles. Of these 792,000 recalls, 39,000 are in Canada1 and the bulk of the rest are in the U.S. For the same problem, Ford is also recalling an unspecified number of 2001 F-Series Supercrew pickup trucks.
The recall was prompted by an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration commenced in November 2004 after 36 reports of fires. The NHTSA apparently suspects that the fires were due to a faulty cruise control switch, as it is this that Ford will initially deactivate and eventually replace.
Earlier in January, General Motors Corporation recalled 98,221 U.S. sold 2000 Chevrolet and GMC pickup trucks and SUVs. See "General Motors Starts Year with a Bang: 98,221 Chevrolet and GMC Trucks Are Recalled for Safety Problem," January 2005, AOI.
In 2003, Ford's U.S. safety recalls per vehicle sold in recent years was about 1/2 of GM's2, and in the first half of of 2004, it was about 3/8 of GM's3. However, in 2003, Ford's U.S. safety recalls per vehicle sold in recent years was about 7 times Toyota Motor Corporation's2, and in the first half of 2004, it was about 3 times Toyota's3. By safety recalls, as well as by reliability measures, both Ford quality and General Motors quality lag.
