Fracturing Steering Knuckle and Separating Wheel Prompts NHTSA Safety Investigation of General Motors' Hummer H2
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has commenced an investigation into the safety of 2003 and 2004 Hummer H2s. Although a new model, four drivers have already reported a fracture in the steering knuckle that caused a loss of control of the vehicle. One veered into oncoming traffic before ending up in the ditch. Another crashed into a parked car. On three, a wheel fell off.
The Hummer H2 is on Consumer Reports list of least reliable vehicle models. (See "Toyota and Honda Dominate Most Reliable SUV List; General Motors and Ford Dominate Least Reliable SUV List," November 2004.) Often a vehicle model that is poor by one measure of quality is poor by more.
General Motors' 1996 to 2000 Reliability Percentrank average is .29, the lowest among the auto manufacturers with a 3% or more U.S. market share. By comparison, Chrysler has a 1996-2000 RPA of .33, Ford - .50, Honda - .84, and Toyota - .90.
