GM Safety Recalls Take a Leap
On Thursday, November 4th, General Motors Corporation announced a 1.5 million vehicle North American recall for safety problems. The announcement brought GM's 2004 North American safety recall total to 10.47 million vehicles. For all of 2003, GM's U.S. safety recalls totaled 7.4 million, 4 million greater than the second-highest number of manufacturer safety recalls in 2003 - 3.4 million by Ford Motor Company. GM's Canadian and Mexican safety recalls in 2003 added an additional .4 million vehicles, for a GM 2003 North American total of 7.8 million vehicles.
Comparison with Toyota's recalls puts the size of GM's safety recalls in perspective. In 2003, Toyota recalled 0.2 million U.S. vehicles for safety problems. When correction is made for the number of vehicles sold in the U.S. by each in recent years, General Motors had about 13 times the number of U.S. safety recalls of Toyota in 2003. (See "General Motors' U.S. 2003 Recall Numbers: A Bottomless Pit and a GM Defense?" March 2003.) As of July 2, 2004, General Motors had issued safety recalls on 7.92 million U.S. vehicles and Toyota - on 0.37 million U.S. vehicles. This gave GM a U.S. safety recall total, per U.S. vehicle sold in recent years, of about 8 times that of Toyota, for the first half of 2004. (See "General Motors' Recalls Remain Gargantuan in First Half of 2004," July 2004.) Toyota's recall total through November was not immediately available.
The vehicles being recalled are:
946,817 North American SUVs (871,473 U.S. SUVs) - the 2002-2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer and TrailBlazer EXT, GMC Envoy XL, Oldsmobile Bravada, and Buick Ranier, for brake lights1,2,3,4 and signal lights1 that can stop functioning,
339,008 North American (256,025 U.S.) 2003 Chevrolet Cavaliers and Pontiac Sunfires, for brake and signal light failure due to bulb and socket separation and consequent arching (General Motors plans to stick dielectric grease into the socket to see whether it will do the job,1,4 but has agreed - says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration - to replace the assembly if it doesn't.1),
204,317 North American (92,863 U.S.) 2003 Chevrolet Malibus, Pontiac Grand Ams, and Oldsmobile Aleros, for an accelerator pedal that can stick,
5,914 North American (about 5,200 U.S.) 2004-2005 Cadillac XLRs and 2005 Chevrolet Corvettes for a break fluid leak that may develop.
