Toyota and Honda Dominate Most Reliable SUV List; General Motors and Ford Dominate Least Reliable SUV List
Four of Toyota Motor Corporation's sport utility vehicle models made Consumer Reports' most reliable list. These are the Toyota Land Cruiser, the Toyota Highlander, the Toyota RAV4, and the Lexus LX 470.
Three of Honda Motor Company's SUV models made Consumer Reports most reliable list. They are the Honda Element, the Honda CR-V, and the Acura MDX.
Together, Toyota and Honda accounted for seven of the nine models on the most reliable list. The remaining two are the Mitsubishi Endeavor and the Subaru Forester.
At the opposite end, five of General Motors Corporation's SUV models made the least reliable list. They are Chevrolet's Blazer, Hummer's H2, Chevrolet's TrailBlazer, GMC's Envoy, and Saturn's Vue, the first with perennially near-bottom Reliability Percentranks (See Table I-SUVCRP.).
Five of Ford Motor Company's SUV models made the least reliable list. They are Land Rover's Freelander, Lincoln's Navigator, Volvo's XC90, the Ford Excursion, and the Ford Expedition. Land Rover and Volvo (the car manufacturer, not the heavy truck manufacturer) are European subsidiaries of Ford.
Together, General Motors and Ford accounted for 10 of the worst 14, by this reliability measure. The remaining four were Volkswagen's Touareg, Nissan's Armada, Porsche's Cayenne, and Mercedes-Benz' U.S.-made M-Class, the last with perennially near-bottom Reliability Percentranks (See Table I-SUVCRP.).
These reliability lists are based on CR's membership responses regarding serious problems experienced with vehicles of the three most recent model years - 2003, 2004, and 2005. Consequently, they should be viewed with caution if ownership of a longer duration is anticipated. Nonetheless, if a Toyota or Honda model shines early (within the first three years), it generally shines later, for at least the next five years.
To view the fourteen-year history of Reliability Percentranks for SUVs, see Table I-SUVCRP.
