Toyota and Honda Dominate Consumer Reports' Best in Class by Cargo Space and Fuel Economy
On page 9 of its October 2004 issue, Consumer Reports lists its best in class motor vehicle models by cargo space and miles per gallon. This list is broken into four categories - minivans, mid-sized SUVs, small SUVs, and small wagons. Each category gives the top four recommended vehicle models. The fifteen of these sixteen that are not rebadges of products engineered by another manufacturer are broken down by auto manufacturer in the following table.
CR's Top 15 Recommended Fuel Efficient Cargo Carriers
Auto Manufacturer Number Recommended Toyota 6 Honda 4 Subaru 1 Nissan 1 Mazda 1 Volvo 1 Ford 1 Although Toyota and Honda solidly dominate this table of the top fifteen, data suggest that CR's list may be far too inclusive for the discriminating consumer. Firstly, Ford's Focus wagon, the fourth (third non-rebadge) in the small wagon sublist, is a subject of the Center for Auto Safety's article "Fords [sic] Trouble Prone Focus Hit with Safety Recalls, Service Campaigns & Investigations,"1 which lists in detail Ford Focus safety recalls. Secondly, Volvo, which has a model that is third among the recommended in the mid-sized SUV sublist, has a 1995-1999 Reliability Percentrank average of .35. This contrasts sharply with Toyota's .90 and Honda's .86 and falls well below even Ford's average of .51.
Consequently, the discriminating consumer may wish to restrict himself or herself to the top two recommended models in any category. With the one rebadge excluded, the following table gives a breakdown of these top eight by auto manufacturer.
