General Motors Safety Recalls Keep Rolling On
|
Auto on Info August 2004 General Motors Safety Recalls Keep Rolling On GM's safety recalls for the first half of 2004 already exceed those for all of 2003 by more than 500,000 units - 7,920,000 versus 7,400,000. However, Reuters reports that to this year's 7.9 million recalls by General Motors, 199,793 Buick Centuries and Regals are to be added. The Buicks are being recalled for reduced headlight illumination. And the Associated Press reports that to this 8.1 million may be added another 1.2 million GM sport utility vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has upgraded an investigation into brake light failures on 1.2 million 2002-2004 Chevrolet Trailblazers, GMC Envoys, and Oldsmobile Bravadas. A recall often follows an upgraded investigation. The upgrade by the NHTSA was prompted by 687 complaints of brake light failure. General Motors states that the brake lights fail when heat from the bulb deforms the light socket. GM engineers are reported to have solved the problem, and the SUVs assembled after October 2003 are reported to have sockets that don't deform from the bulbs they carry. The following table summarizes safety recalls by the Big Three and Toyota for 2003 and the first half of 2004.
