Chevrolet's Aveo Adds to General Motors' Heap of Safety Recalls
The Associated Press reports that General Motors is recalling 32,301 of its new Chevrolet Aveos due to a new seat belt that can become unusable. This follows a safety recall of 199,793 Buicks earlier this month and safety recalls of 7.9 million in the first six months of this year. The following table gives year-to-date recalls through July 2, 2004, for General Motors, and for Ford, Chrysler, and Toyota, the latter three for comparison.

Auto Manufacturer Recalls for First Half of 2004 General Motors 7,920,000 Ford 1,690,000 Chrysler 3,210,000 Toyota 370,000 Earlier this year General Motors had issued a stop delivery order on its Aveos because of several crashes (See General Motors Issues Stop Delivery Order on a Chevrolet, February 2004, Auto on Info), but resumed deliveries after it had decided that the vehicle was not the cause.
