CCC Information Services' 2003 Motor Vehicle Theft Data Give Toyota Another Auto Manufacturer Award for Durability
In May, the Detroit Free Press published CCC Information Services, Inc.'s 2003 top 25 most stolen vehicles list for the United States. The list is mapped into the following table.
Table I: The Number of Models in CCC's 25 Most Stolen Motor Vehicle Models List for 2003 by Model Year and Manufacturer Manufacturer or Group Model Year
1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 Toyota 1 1 1 Honda 1 2 3 3 2 1 1 2 1 Big Three 1 1 1 1 Other 1 1 The Toyota Camry accounts for the three Toyota entries for model years 1989, 1990, and 1991.
From the table, it appears that:
1. Significant demand for used Camry parts both begins and extends well beyond 10 years after manufacture of the vehicles. This gives Toyota another AOI durability award.
2. Demand for used Honda parts persists beyond 10 years after manufacture. However, significant demand for used Honda parts arises far too early to warrant a durability award.
3. There exists limited demand for used parts from Big Three vehicles. This suggests quick dilapidation of vehicular parts and the use of cheap materials or poor engineering designs that hasten dilapidation.
CCC's 2003 top 25 list was determined by dividing the number of vehicles stolen and unrecovered - or unrecoverable by reason of being stripped to the point of full loss - by the number of U.S. registered vehicles of the particular model-year. In prior years, the number of stolen vehicles of a particular model-year was uncorrected for the size of the existing pool of vehicles from which theft may have been made.
The AOI manufacturer award for durability arising from CCC's 2003 list of most stolen vehicles brings the number of Toyota's awards for durability to 7 and Toyota's total number of manufacturer awards to 24. The following tables summarize current AOI award totals.
