|
Auto on Info March 2004 In the U.S. in February 2004, Toyota and Nissan Auto Sales Soar Again Nissan increased its U.S. auto sales by 48% in February 2004. Its truck - SUV, minivan, and pickup - sales rose 79%; its car sales rose 29%. Toyota's February 2004 sales rose 18%. Its truck sales rose 28% and its car sales rose 9%.. Sales of Toyota's luxury line, Lexus, were up 34%.1 Honda's February 2004 sales rose 7%, Subaru's sales fell 6%, and Mazda's sales rose 18%. Mazda's 1995-1999 Reliability Percentrank average is .72, the fifth highest after Toyota, Honda, Subaru, and Nissan. In short, it was a second month of very good performance by the manufacturers of high reliability vehicles. For much of the rest, it was less spectacular. For General Motors, with a 1995-1999 Reliability Percentrank of .30, sales rose 6% and for Chrysler, with a 1995-1999 Reliability Percentrank of .31, sales rose 1%, but for Ford, with a 1995-1999 Reliability Percentrank of .51, sales fell 3%. These numbers suggest that for General Motors to maintain its position relative to the other two of the Big Three, it is free to lower its relative reliability even further. The U.S. market shares, historical and year-to-date, together with natural market share estimates, are given in the table below.
In the niche markets, Porsche sales rose 86%, BMW sales rose 2%, and Mercedes-Benz sales rose 1%. The rotation out of Mercedes' U.S. made M-Class SUV, with its abysmal 1998-2000 Reliability Percentranks of .03, .15, and .02, continued to hurt the luxury line maker. Note: Big Three sales and market shares do not include sales of European lines - Mercedes-Benz, Saab, Volvo, Jaguar, and Land Rover. 1"Car, Light-Truck Sales Increase 4.8% in U.S.," Wall Street Journal, March 3, 2004, p.
