GM's Quality Problems Keep Rolling Out: U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Ratchets Up Investigation into General Motors' Collapsing Tailgates

Reuters reports:

1. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has upgraded its probe into the breakage of tailgate support cables on General Motors' 1999-20031 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra and 2002-20031 Chevrolet Avalanche and Cadillac EXT pickup trucks,

2. NHTSA says that GM has reported with regard to the support cable breakage problem:

a. 96 injuries,

b. 430 complaints of occurrence,

c. 61,000 warranty claims.

This problem follows a second quest for class action status in GM's piston slap lawsuits in January (see "Do General Motors' Pickup Trucks and SUVs Make a Grotesque Noise?") and three recalls and one stop delivery order in February (see "General Motors Issues Stop Delivery Order on a Chevrolet").

What a mess.
