Auto on Info November 2003 In the U.S. in October 2003, Nissan Auto Sales Soar Again, Toyota Has Another Double Digit Gain In October 2003, Nissan's auto sales rose more than 18% over those of October 2002. Its imported truck (SUV-pickup-minivan) sales rose more than 116%. Toyota sales rose more than 10%. Both its domestic and imported truck sales rose by more than 23%. Toyota and Nissan were the only auto manufacturers of the top seven, by U.S. auto sales, to have increased car (non-truck) sales in October 2003, although the increases for both were small. Mazda's auto sales increased by about 52%, but this still left year-to-date 2003 sales lower than those for the comparable 2002 period. Honda sales declined modestly, less than 3% - increased truck sales largely offsetting lower car sales. Among the niche vendors, Porsche sales rose 84% and BMW sales rose 16%. Mercedes-Benz squeezed out an increase of 2%, but its M-Class U.S. made sport utility vehicle, with a 1995-1999 Reliability Percentrank average of .09, experienced a sales plunge of nearly 37%. Subaru sales dropped nearly 13%, but its 2003 cumulative sales exceed those for the comparable period of 2002. General Motors' sales dropped 7% and Ford's nearly 3%, but Chrysler made a bit of a comeback from recent lows with nearly an 11% rise. The cumulative U.S. market share loss by the Big Three, through October 31, 2003, is 1.7 percentage points, so the punitive response by U.S. Big Three consumers to the relatively low reliability of Big Three products remains rather muted and barring a switch in preferences from discounts to abandonment, steady erosion is likely the course of history. U.S. market shares, historical and year-to-date, together with natural market share estimates, are given in the table below..
In the Hyundai-General Motors war, Hyundai dealt another blow with nearly a 10% gain in sales compared to GM's 7+% loss in sales.
