Auto on Info September 2003 By U.S. Auto Sales in August 2003, the Big Three Aren't; by U.S. Auto Sales Change, the Top Four Trounce Again It had to happen; in August 2003 it did. The Big Three joined those terms that describe a category, but no longer a reality. General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler are called the Big Three - a term that reflects their U.S. market dominance circa 1960. However, today all three are no longer so grand and Chrysler is not big at all; in fact, it was fourth in U.S. vehicle sales in August 2003, the first time ever. Toyota occasioned the displacement. The Top Four - Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Subaru - saw their U.S. passenger vehicle sales rise 11%, 11%, 14%, and 11% in August 2003, respectively. The Big Three - General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler- saw their passenger vehicle sales drop - -1%, -13%, and -6%, respectively. The Top Four are grouped such by the reliability of their products. Ford's continuing large sales losses virtually assure General Motors of a .28 U.S. market share for 2003. The following table gives historical and year-to-date market shares, an estimate as to the natural market share of each manufacturer, the distance remaining to the natural market share, and the distance traversed since 1993.
In the Hyundai vs. General Motors war, Hyundai dealt another blow with a 6% rise in August unit sales. BMW sales were up 7% in August 2003; Mercedes-Benz sales were down 1%. The 35-year-old venerable Toyota Corolla continues to soar - up 36% in August 2003 sales.
