J. D. Power Drops a Bar, General Motors Jumps a Hurdle
|
Auto on Info July 2003 J. D. Power Drops a Bar, General Motors Jumps a Hurdle For 2003, J.D. Power & Associates did a survey of problems in 3 year old vehicles of model year 2000, in lieu of its usual survey of problems in 4 to 5 year old vehicles.1 Again, both lines of each of the Reliable Two - Toyota and Honda - were near the top.1 However, two of General Motors lines, Buick and Cadillac, also fared well.1 This contrasts sharply with the Reliability Grade history of these two lines, given below:
and the extrapolations of the Reliability Percentrank averages of these two lines, given below:
The interesting questions here are (1) whether these two lines, for model year 2000, will hold together well enough for an extra few months to receive a Reliability Grade, for the vehicular age range of 2-4 years, above an F and (2) if so, for how many vehicular age ranges might they stay above an F. J.D. Power's 3-year ownership survey of problems has value as many Big Three owners dispose of their vehicles shortly before, at, or very shortly after expiration of the 3-year warranty period. 1"CARS," Wall Street Journal, July 9, 2003, p. D5 To express your opinion as to how you think the Buick and Cadillac lines for model year 2000 will fare when the data become available, click here to be taken to the Mini-Survey, "Will General Motors' Buick and Cadillac Lines for Model Year 2000 Get a Reliability Grade Above an F?" |

There is a big difference between the results of the J.D. Power surveys of "complaints" and the reliability measures based on Consumer Reports survey of "serious problems." Site manager's conjecture regarding the divergence of results is that both of the J.D. Power surveys - the 90-day and the 3-year - are heavily weighted toward the trivial, e.g., low gas mileage by the Hummer. In any case, it seems likely that research on the matter will be forthcoming, for several reasons:
The results provided the auto companies likely include a detailed breakdown of the complaints given J.D. Power & Associates; if it were otherwise, site manager would be without explanation as to why auto companies would pay money for the results.
Promptly after publication of Auto on Info's updated Reliability Percentranks, the frequency of site visitation by preeminent universities dramatically increased and the frequency of visitation of Table I-MVRP exceeded the norm by about two orders of magnitude. Likely, these universities downloaded the Reliability Percentranks data.
It seems only a matter of time before researchers at these universities gain access to the detailed results of the J.D. Power surveys.
With access, academic journal articles should follow. At the very least, these articles should provide hints of: (1) What, if any, consumer decision-making value the J.D. Power surveys offer and (2) If the surveys are of any decision-making value to consumers, what the nature of this value is.
In this regard, site manager requests help of visitors. As indexing of academic literature is incomplete and highly fragmentary, site manager requests that should any visitor encounter a study of the merits or relative merits of the J.D. Power surveys, he/she forward a citation.
