General Motors Dumps Another Car Name, This Time - Grand Am
|
Auto on Info July 2003 General Motors Dumps Another Car Name, This Time - Grand Am Per WardsAuto.com, General Motors announced that it plans to dump the Grand Am name from its Pontiac line. Its last year of use is scheduled for 20041. A spokesperson of GM denied that the decision to dump the Grand Am name was due to a reputation for poor quality, "It didn't have a bad brand image at all."1 Nonetheless, the following chart depicts a rather loathsome Reliability Percentrank history for the Grand Am.
In addition to this Reliability Percentrank history, the Pontiac Grand Am has had a Reliability Index Value that has been in the bottom ten for seven pairs of manufacturing years - 1989-1990, 1990-1991, 1991-1992, 1992-1993, 1993-1994, 1994-1995, and 1995-1996, the last pair being the last pair of manufacturing years for which data on 6-8 year old vehicle models are currently available. For 1995-1996, it had the lowest Reliability Index Value of any model. For about two years, the Pontiac Grand Am and the Ford Taurus vied for AOI's Kingship of Worst-Ness title. Ford announced earlier this year that it was dumping the Taurus name. Other names that GM has decided to dump are Cavalier from the Chevrolet line, Catera from the Cadillac line, Suburban from the GMC line, S-10, Sonoma, and S-Series.1 The Cavalier is notorious for its short-lived status as a rebadged export to Japan. The Catera is notorious for its short-lived existence and its so-far perfect 0 (zero) Reliability Percentrank history. For contrast, the Toyota Corolla, a reliability legend, has a 35-year history in the U.S. and a 37-year history in Japan2, its U.S. sales for 2003 are up sharply - 37.1% for June 20033, and at the time of writing it is number 4 on Carsdirect's top ten selling list of motor vehicles4. 1WardsAuto.com, June 27, 2003, "Pontiac to Drop Grand Am Marque" 2Edmunds.com, "A Toyota Corolla History," http://www.edmunds.com/reviews/generations/articles/94136/article.html 3New York Times on the Web, "Auto Sales in June" chart 4Carsdirect's top ten selling list is accessible by
