In the U.S. in May 2003, Honda Vehicle Sales Soar 18%, Nissan and Toyota Sales Rise 7% and 6% Respectively, Big Three Sales Are Mixed
Honda's May sales of SUVs and minivans were up 57%; this propelled its total U.S. sales to an 18% gain for the month. Sales of the redoubtable Toyota Corolla gained 27%1; this held Toyota's car sales steady and permitted imported SUVs to hurl total Toyota sales to a 6% gain. Nissan's sales gains were quite evenly distributed between cars and trucks. Big discounts by GM gave it a modest monthly gain. Ford and Chrysler had modest monthly losses.
The historical and current U.S. market shares for selected auto manufacturers is given in the following table.
![]()
Ford's year-to-date share does not include Volvo, Jaguar, and Land Rover.
Toyota, Honda, and Nissan are holding on to their market share gains and each seems likely to close the year with a U.S. market share gain of .01, when shares are rounded to the second decimal place. Hyundai will almost certainly have to wait another year to garner another .01 share of the U.S. market. The Big Three continue their long historical decline.
