In the U.S. in March 2003, Big Three Sales Drop Again; Toyota Sales Jump; BMW, Honda, Hyundai, and Subaru Sales Soar
In March 2003, the auto sales by the Big Three continued their decline. General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler year-over-year sales for the month of March were down 3.2%, 4.3%, and 3.0%, respectively.1
In contrast, Toyota sales jumped 9.2%, and BMW, Honda, Hyundai, and Subaru sales leaped 18.6%, 20.7%, 25.0%, and 34.4%, respectively.1 BMW's sales advance was helped by its new Mini; 1 Toyota's sales advance was helped by its legendary Corolla.2
The contrast may reflect growing dissatisfaction with Big Three reliability; however, it may simply reflect the fact that a disproportionately large share of the consumers currently in the market are the more affluent, demanding, and better informed.
In the Hyundai vs. General Motors war, Hyundai marched on, but it has a long way to march. Its U.S. market share for March advanced to .03, rounded to the nearest hundredth, but Hyundai's year-to-date share remains .02.1
In the BMW vs. Mercedes-Benz race, M-B is rather now out of view, although M-B did manage a very small gain of 1.8% in March 2003.1
The following table gives a history of U.S. market shares for selected manufacturers.
