In the U.S. in January 2003, Honda Narrows Sales Gap with Toyota, Kia Narrows Sales Gap with Hyundai, BMW Widens Sales Lead over Mercedes, GM Sales Drop
In January 2003, Toyota's U.S. sales lead over Honda fell to 29,326 from 41,630 in January 2002 and Hyundai's U.S. sales lead over Kia fell to 8,655 from 10,552 in January 2002, but BMW's U.S. sales lead over Mercedes-Benz rose to 2,950 from 825 in January 2002. Also, GM's U.S. sales in January 2003 fell 6,360 from those in the same month of last year.
The following table gives the historical and current U.S. new car market shares.

With regard to the U.S. new car market shares for all of 2003, the things to watch are: (1) Will Toyota hold on to its January share of .11? (2) Will Honda hold on to its January share of .08? (3) Will Nissan hold on to its January share of .05? (4) Will Hyundai raise its share to .03? (5) Will GM's share resume its gentle tumble downward?
