In 2002, the Big Three's U.S. Auto Sales Dropped; the Reliable Two's and Hyundai's Rose; the U.S. New Car Market Share Changed Little
In 2002, General Motors' U.S. auto sales fell 1%, Ford's fell 9%, and Chrysler's fell 2%. In contrast, Toyota's U.S. auto sales rose 1%, Honda's rose 3%, and Hyundai's rose 8%. With regard to the auto manufacturers' 2002 market shares, GM's U.S. new car market share rose .01 - on Ford's big sales plunge, Ford's fell .02, and Toyota's, Honda's, Hyundai's, and Chrysler's remained unchanged, to the nearest second decimal place. The following table gives the historical market shares for these manufacturers.

Save for the market share loss by Ford that was larger than could have been projected by recent historical trends, and GM's consequent incremental improvement, all seems in accord with the multi-year shift toward reliability, durability, and value.
