Is General Motors' Cadillac Division Trying to Make the Worst Cars on Planet Earth?
Well, irrespective of intent, it seems that it's well on its way, if not already there. Two of its models - the Cadillac Catera and the Cadillac Seville - are in the list of the Worst of 1998 with respect to the 1998 model year Reliability Percentranks for 2-4 year old vehicles - with Reliability Percentranks of 0.00 and 0.24, respectively. And the Cadillac Catera and the Cadillac Deville are in the list of the Worst of 1997 with respect to the 1997 model year Reliability Percentranks for 3-5 year old vehicles, with respective Reliability Percentranks of 0.00 and 0.18. In particular, the Cadillac Catera was the worst of all models, per the Reliability Percentrank, for both 1997 and 1998, and with respect to the 1997 model year, for both last year's 2-4 year vehicular age group and this year's 3-5 year vehicular age group. The following tables compare the eleven-year history of the average Reliability Percentranks and Grades for the Lexus, Acura, and Infiniti lines and the Cadillac line.

From the first table, it may be seen that the Cadillac line average Reliability Percentrank plunged from .79 for model year 1988 to .21 for model year 1998, the lowest for all lines offering data for 1998. From the second table, it may be seen that the High Standards Reliability Grade of the Cadillac line went from an unspectacular C+ to a string of Big Three typical F's.
